What you need

Steps

  1. Write your name, phone number and email on a card and place it inside the suitcase on top of your clothes. If the outside tag falls off, this is how the bag gets back to you.

  2. Pack shoes sole down in a bag at the bottom, roll your clothes, and keep charging cables in one small pouch. This saves space and makes security checks quicker.

  3. Stop leaks by squeezing the air out of shampoo and lotion bottles, then closing the cap firmly and sealing each bottle in a clear zip bag.

  4. Photograph the outside of your closed suitcase, plus your baggage receipt and the airline tag, before you hand the bag over at check-in.

  5. Add a bright strap, ribbon or sticker to the outside so you can spot your bag at baggage claim without reading every tag.

  6. Drop an AirTag or Tile tracker into the checked bag so you can see roughly where it is if it goes missing.

  7. In your hotel room, put the suitcase on the luggage rack or in the bathroom before you unpack, then check the door lock and the peephole.

  8. Photograph the room number and save the hotel name and address in your phone for offline use. Set a checkout alarm so nothing gets left behind.

  9. Before leaving the plane, run the check SEAT, POCKET, FLOOR. Passport, medication, wallet and phone should never sit in the seat pocket.

  10. At baggage claim, look over the bag for cuts, missing wheels or a broken zip before you leave the airport. Report damage, delay or tampering at the airline desk right away.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep passports, medication and valuables in your carry-on, never in a checked bag.

Photograph the inside of your packed suitcase so you have a record of what is in it for an insurance claim.

Screenshot your boarding pass and hotel booking so they still open when you have no signal.

Check the airline tag at the gate to confirm the three-letter airport code matches your destination.

Questions

Can I put full-size shampoo in my checked suitcase?

Yes, large bottles are fine in checked baggage. The 100 ml container limit only applies to liquids in your carry-on.

Will an AirTag find a lost checked bag?

It can show you roughly where the bag is, but airlines still handle the official search. Report the bag missing before you leave the airport.

How long do I have to report damaged luggage?

Report it at the airline desk before leaving the terminal. Most airlines set a short deadline, often seven days, for a written claim after that.
