What you need

Steps

  1. Open forms.google.com in your browser and sign in with your Google account. Click the blank form option, or pick a quiz template from the template gallery.

  2. Click Untitled form at the top and type a clear title, such as Biology Unit 3 Test. Add a short description with the instructions, time limit and total marks.

  3. Click the plus button on the right to add a question. Type the question text, then choose the type from the dropdown, like multiple choice, short answer or checkboxes.

  4. Click Answer key under each question and mark the correct answer. Set the points for that question in the box next to it, 1 point by default.

  5. Turn on the Required switch for questions students must answer, so they cannot submit a blank form.

  6. Open the Settings tab and turn on Make this a quiz. Choose when marks are released and whether students see missed questions or correct answers.

  7. Add a new section for each part of the test using the section button, and use the three dot menu to shuffle question order if you want.

  8. Click Send, choose the link icon, tick Shorten URL and copy the link. Share it by email, Google Classroom or your school portal.

  9. Open the Responses tab and click Link to Sheets. This copies every submission into a spreadsheet you can sort, grade and keep as a record.

Tips and common mistakes

Submit the form yourself once before sharing, to check the answer key and the marks students will see.

Keep the answer key switched off from students in Settings if you plan to reuse the same test with another class.

Do not turn on Collect email addresses unless you need to match answers to names, since it makes the form feel less private.

Questions

Do students need a Google account to fill in the form?

No. Anyone with the link can open and submit the form, unless you turn on the setting that limits responses to one per person or requires sign in.

Can I stop people from sending answers after the deadline?

Yes. Go to the Responses tab and turn off Accepting responses. Students who open the link afterwards will see a closed message instead of the questions.

Will the form grade the test for me?

It grades automatically for question types with a set answer key, like multiple choice and short answer. Essay and file upload answers still need marking by hand.
