Steps
Open the Camera app from the Home Screen, the Lock Screen shortcut or the Camera Control button on the side of the phone.
Point the phone at your subject and tap the shutter button to take a photo. Tap and hold the shutter for QuickTake video.
Pinch on the screen or tap the zoom buttons to switch between the ultrawide, main and telephoto lenses.
Swipe across the mode carousel below the shutter to move between Photo, Portrait, Video, Cinematic and other modes.
Tap the arrow at the top to reveal the control strip, then adjust flash, Live Photo, Photographic Styles, aspect ratio and exposure.
Press or slide the Camera Control button to change zoom, exposure or other settings without touching the screen.
Tap the flip button to switch to the front selfie camera, then tap the shutter to take your shot.
Swipe to Video mode, pick a resolution and frame rate, then press record. Use Action mode for shaky scenes.
Open Settings, then Camera, to set your default focal length, preserve settings and customize the control layout.
Tips and common mistakes
Tap and hold on your subject to lock focus and exposure before you reframe the shot.
Turn on Preserve Settings in the Camera settings so your chosen mode and filters stay put between launches.
Use Night mode by holding the phone still in low light and waiting for the countdown to finish.
Clean the lens with a soft cloth before shooting, since smudges soften photos.

It is a physical button on the side of the iPhone 18 Pro that opens the camera and lets you adjust zoom, exposure and other settings with a press or slide.
