Steps
Open your file manager and go to the WhatsApp media folder. On most Android phones that is Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp Media. On older versions it is WhatsApp/Media.
Open the Images, Documents, Voice Notes and Video subfolders. Deleted chats often leave the files behind, so look for anything dated around the day you lost them.
If the folder looks empty in your gallery, a hidden.nomedia file is blocking it. Turn on show hidden files in your file manager so the media appears again.
Long-press a file you want to keep, tap Copy, then paste it into your Pictures or Downloads folder. That keeps it safe if WhatsApp clears its cache later.
Check your gallery app and its Trash or Recently Deleted album. Many phones hold deleted photos for around 30 days before removing them for good.
Open the chat in WhatsApp and scroll up. Tap any photo or voice note still showing there and save it again with the download or share button.
In WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup. Check the date of the last Google Drive or iCloud backup before you change anything.
On Android, uninstall WhatsApp, reinstall it from the Play Store, verify your number and tap Restore when the backup prompt appears.
On iPhone, delete the app, reinstall it from the App Store, verify your number and choose Restore from an iCloud backup made before the files were deleted.
Tips and common mistakes
Turn on auto-download for photos, audio and documents in Settings, then Storage and data, so future files are saved to your phone.
A backup only holds what existed on the backup date, so anything sent after that cannot be recovered from it.
Do the reinstall and restore last, because it replaces the chats currently on your phone with the older backup.
Questions
Can I recover WhatsApp files without a backup?
Sometimes. Check the WhatsApp media folders and your gallery trash first, since files still on the phone can be copied out. Anything wiped with no backup is usually gone for good.
Where does WhatsApp save voice notes on Android?
In the Voice Notes folder inside WhatsApp Media, usually Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp Media/Voice Notes. Look there before you try a backup restore.
Does uninstalling WhatsApp delete my media?
Yes, it removes the app and its local media. Copy important files to another folder or run a backup to Google Drive or iCloud before you uninstall.
