How to use Split View in Google Chrome on Windows 11 and 10

Split View shows two websites side by side inside one Chrome window, so you can compare pages or research without switching tabs. It suits anyone on Windows 10 or 11 who wants a quick split screen in the browser. You only need an up-to-date copy of Chrome and two pages to pair.

What you need

Steps

  1. Update Chrome first, because the Split View options only appear in recent versions. Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu, then Help, then About Google Chrome.

  2. Open the first website in a normal tab. This page becomes the left side of your split.

  3. Right-click the tab and choose Add tab to new split view. A list of your open tabs appears.

  4. Pick the second tab from the list. Both pages now sit side by side in the same window.

  5. If the second page is not open yet, open it in a tab first, then repeat the split. You can also right-click the tab strip and choose New split view with current tab.

  6. Drag the divider between the two panes left or right to give one website more space.

  7. Click links inside a pane to load the new page there, so the other site stays visible while you read.

  8. To close the split, click the X on one of the two tabs. The remaining page fills the window again.

Tips and common mistakes

If you do not see the split view options, update Chrome and restart it before trying again.

Split View holds only two pages at a time, so open a second Chrome window if you need more.

A split pair lives in one window, so a brand new window starts with normal full-width tabs.

Resize the panes by dragging the divider slowly, and the widths are remembered for that pair.

Questions

Does Split View work on Windows 10 as well as Windows 11?

Yes. The feature is built into Chrome itself, so it works the same on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Can I put three or more websites in one split?

No. Split View pairs exactly two pages. For more, open extra Chrome windows and arrange them with the Windows snap feature.

Why is Add tab to new split view missing from my tab menu?

Your Chrome version is probably out of date. Check for updates in the About Google Chrome page, restart the browser, then right-click a tab again.
