What you need

Steps

  1. Open Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Location Services. Make sure Location Services is on and Apple Maps is set to While Using the App with Precise Location enabled.

  2. In Settings, open Maps and pick your preferred travel mode. Turn on Show Parked Location so Maps can mark where you left the car.

  3. After you disconnect from CarPlay or your car's Bluetooth, Maps drops a Parked Car pin. Tap it for walking directions back to the car.

  4. Tap the map mode button in the corner to switch between Explore, Driving, Transit and Satellite. Use Transit to check lines and timetables before you leave.

  5. Tap the compass to snap the map back to north, then tap it again to follow your heading. Pinch or rotate with two fingers to adjust the view.

  6. Tap a place, then tap Look Around for street-level photos. Some shopping malls and airports also offer indoor maps you can browse floor by floor.

  7. Enter your destination, then tap the departure time at the bottom and choose Arrive By. Maps works out when you need to leave.

  8. Search for a place, tap Add to Guides, then create a new guide or add it to an existing one. Share the guide with a link so others get the same list.

  9. Search the area you need and tap the download option on its place card, or open Settings, Maps, Offline Maps to save a region. Adjust the map area before saving.

  10. Say Hey Siri, directions to a place name to start navigating without touching the phone. Pair an Apple Watch to get taps on your wrist before each turn.

Tips and common mistakes

Download offline maps before a trip, because you cannot save a new area without a connection.

Share your arrival time from the trip card so people know when to expect you.

If the map keeps spinning as you turn, tap the compass once to lock north and again to follow your heading.

Check the place card for hours, phone number and price level before you set off, which saves a second search.

Questions

Does Apple Maps work without internet?

Yes, if you download a map area first. You get directions and basic place info offline, but live traffic and fresh search results need a connection.

How does Apple Maps know where I parked?

It drops a pin when your iPhone disconnects from CarPlay or the car's Bluetooth. Turn on Show Parked Location in Settings, Maps to keep it.

Can I get Apple Maps on Android?

No. It comes only on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, so Android users need a different navigation app.
