Steps

  1. Open Settings, tap your name at the top, then iCloud, then Photos. Turn on Shared Albums. Without this switch the shared album option will not appear in Photos.

  2. Open the Photos app and tap Albums at the bottom of the screen. Scroll down to the Shared Albums section and tap the plus button to start a new album.

  3. Type a name for the album and add an optional comment. Leave the public website switch off unless you want a link anyone can open, then tap Next or Create.

  4. Invite people by tapping the plus in the invite field and entering names, phone numbers or email addresses. Tap Create or Add, and each person gets an invitation to join.

  5. Add your pictures by opening the album and tapping the plus, or select photos in your library, tap Share, then Add to Shared Album.

  6. Subscribers can view, like and comment on every photo. Turn on Subscribers Can Post in the album settings if you want them to upload their own pictures too.

  7. Tap People inside the album to invite more people or remove someone. Tap Delete at the bottom of the album screen to remove the whole album.

Tips and common mistakes

Photos in a Shared Album do not count against your iCloud storage space.

Turn on the public website option if someone has an Android phone or a computer and cannot join through an Apple Account.

An album holds up to 5,000 photos and videos, and videos can be up to 5 minutes long.

If the Shared Albums switch is off, the plus button will be missing from the Albums tab.

Questions

Do the people I invite need an iPhone?

No. They can join with an Apple Account on any device, or you can turn on the public website so they open the album in a browser on Android or a computer.

Does a Shared Album use my iCloud storage?

No, shared albums are stored separately and do not take up space in your iCloud storage plan.

Why is there no plus button in the Albums tab?

Shared Albums is probably turned off. Go to Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then Photos and switch it on.
