How to turn on face grouping in Google Photos on Android

Face grouping makes Google Photos sort your library by the people (and pets) in each shot, so you can pull up photos of one person in seconds. This guide suits any Android user with a normal Google account. You just need the Google Photos app and a few minutes.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open the Google Photos app on your Android phone and make sure you are signed in to the Google account that holds your pictures.

  2. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner of the screen to open the account menu.

  3. Tap Photos settings in that menu.

  4. Find the Group similar faces option in the settings list and tap it.

  5. Turn on the Group similar faces toggle. If you also want cats and dogs grouped, turn on Show pets as well.

  6. Go back to the main library and let Google Photos scan your library. This can take a while on a large collection.

  7. Open the Search tab and look for the People and pets section to see the face groups that were created.

  8. Tap a face group, then tap the name field to label the person so you can search for them by name later.

  9. If the same person appears in two groups, open one group, use the menu and choose Merge face groups to combine them.

Tips and common mistakes

The option may be missing if face grouping is not available in your country or if a work or school account has it switched off by the admin.

Naming each person as soon as a group appears makes searching much faster than scrolling through unnamed faces.

New photos can take hours or days to be sorted into groups, so check back later before assuming it failed.

Turning the toggle off later removes the existing face groups from your account.

Questions

Why can't I see Group similar faces in my settings?

Face grouping is not available in every country, and Google Workspace admins can disable it for work accounts. Try a personal Google account and check that your app is up to date.

Does face grouping work on photos that are not backed up?

Face grouping needs your photos in your Google Photos library. Items stored only on your phone's local storage may not be grouped until they are added to your account.

Can I remove a face group I don't want?

Yes. Open the group, use the menu to hide it, or turn off Group similar faces in settings to clear all groups.
