What you need
Steps
Open ChatGPT Work instead of regular Chat when the task involves your own files or connected apps. Keep Chat for quick one-off questions and Codex for coding work.
Make a project folder on your computer and mount it in ChatGPT Work so the app can read and write inside it.
Create a plain text file called AGENTS.md in the top level of that folder. This is the rulebook ChatGPT Work reads before every task.
Write your rules in plain English: what you do, the tone you want, the output formats you like, and anything it must never do. Keep each rule to one line.
Add a short routing map to AGENTS.md that tells ChatGPT which file or subfolder to check for each type of task.
Connect plugins such as Gmail and Google Calendar so ChatGPT Work can pull in real messages and events while it drafts.
Use the side panel to keep the folder and its rules in view while you work in other apps, and drop new files in as you go.
When a task comes out well, save it as a Skill. Next time, correct the output instead of starting over so the Skill learns from your edits.
Reread your AGENTS.md every few weeks and move any rule you keep repeating into it, so the system gets better on its own.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep AGENTS.md short and specific, because a long rulebook gets skimmed and half ignored.
Put the file at the very top of the mounted folder so it is the first thing ChatGPT reads.
Fix bad output by editing it, then save the corrected version as a Skill so the fix sticks.
Check any email or calendar draft before it goes out, since the plugin is working from real account data.
Questions
What is the difference between ChatGPT Chat, Work and Codex?
Work is built for tasks that run against your own files and connected tools. Regular Chat suits quick one-off questions, and Codex is aimed at coding.
Do I have to build the folder twice if I also use Claude Cowork?
No. The same AGENTS.md folder works in both, so you build the rulebook once and mount it wherever you need it.
How do I stop correcting the same mistake every week?
Save the task as a Skill and correct its output rather than starting from scratch. The Skill picks up your edits, and the rule can also go into AGENTS.md.
