What you need
Steps
Sign in at canva.com and click Create a design, then pick a size such as Instagram Post or Presentation.
In the left sidebar click Uploads, then Upload files and choose your image from your device.
Click the uploaded image to drop it onto the page, or drag it onto the canvas.
Right-click the image on the page and choose Set image as background. Canva stretches it to fill the whole page.
If the crop looks wrong, click the background, then use the crop handles or the Fill option to nudge the visible area.
Add your headline with the Text tab, or drop a shape from Elements over the photo so the words stay readable.
Click Share, then Download, pick PNG for images or PDF Print for printing, and save the file.
Tips and common mistakes
Use an image at least as large as your design size, or it will look blurry when you export.
A background image locks in place, so you will not move it by accident while dragging text around.
Place a dark shape at 30 to 50 percent transparency over busy photos to keep white text readable.
On a multi-page design, set the background on each page separately unless you choose to apply it to all.
Questions
Does the background image need a certain size?
No fixed size is required, but match or exceed your design dimensions. A 1080 by 1080 pixel image suits a square post, and a 1920 by 1080 image suits a presentation slide.
How do I remove a background image?
Click the page background, open the colour tile in the editor toolbar and pick a plain colour or white. The photo is replaced, not deleted from your uploads.
Can I use the same photo on every page?
Yes. After setting it on the first page, right-click the background and choose to apply it to all pages, or repeat the steps on each page you want changed.
