Steps
Run the Lenovo Vantage battery diagnostic first. Only replace the battery if the test shows it is defective or the battery is physically damaged.
Power off the laptop and unplug the charger. Put on a grounding strap and work on a clean, non-conductive surface to protect against static.
Turn the laptop over and remove the screws holding the bottom cover. Keep them in order so they go back in the right holes.
Pry the bottom cover loose with a plastic tool and lift it off. Avoid metal tools on plastic parts to prevent scratches.
Disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard. Do not pull on the wires, ease the plug out by its body.
Remove the screws that secure the battery, then lift the old battery out of the chassis.
Set the new Lenovo battery in place and refit its screws. Do not crush or puncture the battery at any point.
Reconnect the battery connector to the motherboard and press it down firmly.
Refit the bottom cover and tighten all screws. Then plug in the charger and power the laptop on to check the battery is recognised.
Tips and common mistakes
Use only the authorized Lenovo battery for your machine type. Other batteries could ignite or explode.
Store a spare battery at room temperature charged to about 30 to 50 percent, and top it up about once a year.
Do not put the old battery in household waste. Recycle it under your local rules.
If the battery looks swollen, damaged or leaking, stop and have it serviced rather than replacing it yourself.
Questions
Do I need to replace the battery if it drains fast?
Not always. Run the Vantage battery diagnostic first. Lenovo says the battery should only be replaced if the test shows it is defective or the battery is physically damaged.
Will a third-party battery work?
Lenovo only tests and approves its own batteries. An unauthorized battery may not fit or charge correctly and is not covered by warranty.
How long does the swap take?
Lenovo estimates about 15 minutes with a screwdriver kit. Allow a little extra time if it is your first time opening the laptop.
