What you need

Steps

  1. Plug in the correct charger and check the cable and adapter for fraying, bent pins or burn marks. Leave the MacBook charging for at least 15 minutes before you press the power button.

  2. Look at the charging light. A MagSafe connector should glow amber or green, and a USB-C port should show a battery icon on screen. No light points to the charger, cable or port.

  3. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, release it, then press it once. On Apple Silicon Macs this is the only reset you need.

  4. On an Intel Mac with a T2 chip, shut it down, then hold Control, Option, Shift and the power button for 7 seconds. Hold all four again for another 7 seconds and release.

  5. Swap in a different charger, cable and wall socket, and try another USB-C port if your Mac has more than one. Remove hubs, docks and SD cards first.

  6. Connect an external monitor with a cable or adapter. If you get a picture there, the Mac is running and the built-in screen or its backlight is the problem.

  7. Listen for the fan, feel the base for warmth and watch for a startup chime. Any of these means power is reaching the logic board.

  8. Try Recovery mode. On Apple Silicon, hold the power button until you see Loading startup options. On Intel, hold Command and R at startup.

  9. Run Apple Diagnostics by holding D at startup on Intel, or by holding the power button on Apple Silicon. Note the reference code it shows.

  10. If nothing helps, back up through Target Disk Mode or book a repair. Do not pry the case open yourself, because the battery is glued in place.

Tips and common mistakes

A completely drained battery can take 15 to 30 minutes on the charger before the Mac responds at all.

Cheap hubs and docks sometimes block charging, so test with the charger plugged straight into the Mac.

Opening a MacBook yourself can void the warranty and risks damaging the glued battery, so let an authorised repairer do it.

Questions

Why won't my MacBook turn on when the charger light is on?

Power is reaching the Mac, so the fault is usually the display, the logic board or a frozen system. Try a force restart and an external monitor before assuming the worst.

How do I reset the SMC on an M1 or M2 MacBook?

You cannot. Apple Silicon Macs have no SMC reset, so just hold the power button for 10 seconds and release it.

How long should I charge a MacBook that won't switch on?

Give it at least 15 to 30 minutes on a known good charger. A deeply discharged battery often needs that long before the screen shows anything.
