Steps
Power off the laptop and unplug the charger. Hold the power button for a few seconds to drain leftover charge, then flip the machine over.
Remove the screws from the bottom cover. Keep them in order, since some may be different lengths, and set them aside in a tray.
Slide a plastic pry tool into the seam and work around the edges until the bottom cover pops free. Lift it off slowly.
Find the battery connector on the motherboard. Unplug it first before touching anything else, then remove the screws holding the battery in place.
Lift the old battery out. Set the new battery in the same position, screw it down and reconnect the connector firmly.
For fan cleaning, unplug the fan cable and remove its screws. Brush dust out of the blades and heatsink fins, then refit the fan.
For thermal paste, unscrew the heatsink, lift it off and wipe the old paste from the chip and heatsink with a lint-free cloth.
Apply a small pea-sized dot of new paste to the chip, reseat the heatsink and tighten its screws in a cross pattern.
Refit the bottom cover, press the edges down until they click and replace all screws. Plug in the charger and power on to test.
Tips and common mistakes
Unplug the battery before removing any other part to avoid shorting the board.
Do not overtighten the heatsink screws; snug is enough to keep even pressure.
Keep track of screw positions, as mixing lengths can damage the case or board.
Work on a clean, non-carpeted surface and touch a metal object to discharge static first.
Questions
Do I need to disconnect the battery before cleaning the fan?
Yes. Always unplug the battery connector first so the board has no power while you work.
How much thermal paste should I use?
A pea-sized dot in the centre of the chip is enough. Too much can spread onto the board.
Will a new battery fix slow charging?
It can help if the old cell is worn, but check the charger and port first before buying a battery.
