What you need
Steps
Open the Photos app on your iPad and tap Albums at the bottom of the screen. This is where every album you create will live.
Tap the plus button in the top corner and choose New Album from the menu that appears.
Type a clear name such as Receipts, Holiday 2026 or Work, then tap Save. A good name makes the album easy to find later.
Tap each photo you want in the album, then tap Add. The album opens with those photos already inside.
To add one more photo later, open it and tap the Share button, then tap Add to Album and pick the album.
For several photos at once, go to the Library tab, tap Select, tick the pictures, then use Share and Add to Album.
Repeat for each folder you need, for example one album per person, project or trip.
Open the Albums tab to check your work. Tap Edit to rename an album or drag albums into the order you prefer.
Tips and common mistakes
Albums are collections, not real folders, so one photo can sit in several albums without being copied.
Removing a photo from an album keeps it in your library, but deleting the photo removes it everywhere.
Use the Search tab to find photos by place, date or person, then add the results to an album in one go.
Turn on iCloud Photos if you want the same albums to show up on your iPhone and Mac.
Questions
Do albums on iPad work like folders on a computer?
Mostly, but with one difference: a photo can belong to more than one album at once. The original stays in your main library, so albums do not free up storage.
Can I put one album inside another?
No. The iPad Photos app does not support nested folders. Give albums clear names, or split a large album into a few smaller ones instead.
Will these albums appear on my iPhone too?
Yes, if iCloud Photos is turned on for the same Apple Account. The albums sync across your Apple devices, and the photos inside still use your iCloud storage.
