Steps
Update your iPad to iPadOS 27 under Settings, General, Software Update. Then open the first app you want to use from the Home Screen or Dock.
Tap the multitasking button at the top of the app window, the one with three dots, and choose Split View. The app moves to one side of the screen.
Pick your second app from the Home Screen or the Dock. It opens in the space beside the first app and both stay active.
Drag the divider between the two windows left or right to resize them. Each app keeps its own width until you drag again.
Add a third app by dragging its icon from the Dock towards the edge of the screen and holding it there until it snaps into place.
Repeat with a fourth app if your iPad model allows it. You can have up to four app windows open on screen at once.
Rearrange the layout by dragging each window by its top bar. The window controls at the top left close, minimise or resize a window.
Switch between apps by tapping the window you want, or swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reach the Home Screen and Dock.
Remove an app from the layout by tapping the red close control in its window, or use the multitasking button to send it back to full screen.
Tips and common mistakes
Drag apps in from the Dock rather than tapping their icons, or the new app may take over the whole screen.
Keep the number of open windows small on older or lower-storage iPads, since heavy apps can reload when you switch back.
Some games and full-screen video apps refuse to share the screen and will always open on their own.
Save your work before closing a window, as closing an app from the layout can end the session.
Questions
How many apps can I use at the same time?
You can run up to four app windows side by side on supported iPads with iPadOS 27. Smaller or older models may allow fewer.
Why does the second app open full screen instead of splitting?
Tapping an icon usually opens an app on its own. Drag the app from the Dock to the edge of the screen instead, and it will join the current layout.
Does split screen work with every app?
Most apps support it, including Safari, Notes, Files and Mail. A few full-screen apps such as games and some video players do not.
