What you need
Steps
Power off the laptop and unplug the charger. Hold the power button for a few seconds to drain leftover charge.
Turn the laptop upside down. Remove every screw from the bottom cover and keep them in a cup so none go missing.
Slide a plastic pry tool into the seam along the edge. Work slowly around the whole cover until the clips pop free.
Lift the bottom cover off and set it aside. Touch a bare metal part of the frame to discharge static.
Find the battery connector near the edge. Unplug it from the motherboard before touching any other part.
For the SSD, remove the single screw holding the drive, slide it out, then fit the new drive and screw it down.
For the battery, unscrew the mounting screws and lift the pack out. Place the new battery in and screw it down.
Reconnect the battery cable, press the bottom cover back on until the clips click, and refit all screws.
Tips and common mistakes
Always disconnect the battery before removing or installing the SSD to avoid shorting the board.
Keep track of screw lengths, since the bottom cover uses several sizes.
Use a plastic tool, not a metal one, so you do not scratch or bend the case.
Questions
Do I need to remove the battery to change the SSD?
You do not have to take the battery out, but you should unplug its connector first so the board has no power.
Will the laptop boot after I install a new SSD?
A blank SSD has no operating system, so you will need to install Windows or clone your old drive before it boots normally.
What screwdriver fits the bottom cover?
A small Phillips screwdriver works for most X1 Carbon models. Check your exact model, since some use Torx screws.
