What you need
Steps
Power off the laptop and unplug the charger. Hold the power button for a few seconds to drain leftover charge.
Flip the laptop over. Remove the six or seven Phillips screws from the bottom cover and keep them in a cup.
Slide a plastic pry tool into the seam near the hinge. Work it around the edges until the clips pop and lift the cover off.
Disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard first so the board has no power while you work.
To replace the SSD, remove the single screw holding the drive, slide it out at an angle, and fit the new M.2 drive.
To replace the battery, unscrew the screws around the battery pack and lift it out. Do not puncture or bend the pack.
Seat the new battery or SSD, reconnect the battery connector, and press the cover back on until all clips click.
Refit the bottom screws and charge the laptop before the first boot. Check the drive or battery in Windows.
Tips and common mistakes
The RAM is soldered to the board, so buy the model with enough memory up front.
Keep track of screw positions, since the bottom cover screws can differ in length.
Work on a clean, flat surface and touch a metal object first to reduce static damage.
Questions
Can I upgrade the RAM on the X1 Carbon Gen 5?
No. The memory is soldered to the motherboard, so it cannot be changed after purchase.
What SSD fits this laptop?
It takes an M.2 2280 drive. Check the keying and capacity your model supports before buying.
Do I need to disconnect the battery before swapping parts?
Yes. Unplug the battery connector first so the motherboard has no power while you remove or fit components.
