How to make a transparent background in Canva

You will export a Canva design as a PNG or SVG with no background, so the artwork sits cleanly on any colour, photo or slide. It suits anyone making logos, stickers, signatures or product mockups. You need a Canva account and a design with no background element on the page.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open your design in Canva and delete or hide any background colour, photo or shape sitting on the page. The canvas should show the grey and white checkerboard pattern behind your artwork.

  2. Click Share in the top right corner of the editor, then choose Download from the menu that opens.

  3. In the File type dropdown, pick PNG. Choose SVG instead if you need a vector file that keeps its transparency when scaled.

  4. Tick the Transparent background checkbox just below the file type. If you leave it unticked, Canva fills the page with the background colour you set.

  5. Set the size you need, and tick Compress if you want a smaller file. Pick the page number if your design has more than one page.

  6. Click the Download button, then open the saved file and place it on a dark background to confirm the checkerboard shows through.

Tips and common mistakes

The transparent background option is a Canva Pro feature, so the checkbox can be locked on a free account.

If your PNG still has a solid background, an element on the page is covering it. Delete that layer, not just the page colour.

SVG keeps transparency but suits logos and flat shapes better than photos.

Place the finished PNG on a dark slide to spot leftover white edges before you use it.

Questions

Why is the transparent background checkbox greyed out?

It is a Canva Pro feature, so it stays locked on a free plan. Upgrade or start a Pro trial to tick it.

Which file type should I choose, PNG or SVG?

Use PNG for photos, screenshots and anything you will drop into slides or social posts. Use SVG for logos and flat shapes you may need to resize.

Does removing the page colour make my whole design transparent?

No. Only the empty page area becomes transparent. Any shapes, photos or text you added stay fully visible in the export.
