How to create a shared album in Google Photos

Build one album in Google Photos and let family or friends view it from any device, instead of sending pictures one by one. You will create the album, add photos and videos, then invite people by link or Gmail address. It suits anyone with a Google account and the Google Photos app.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open the Google Photos app and check that you are signed in with the Google account that holds your pictures.

  2. Tap Library or Collections at the bottom, open Albums, then tap the plus or New album button to start a new album.

  3. Pick the photos and videos you want to share, then tap Add or Done. Give the album a clear name so people know what it is.

  4. Open the new album and tap the Share icon. Choose the option to turn it into a shared album.

  5. Tap Copy link, then paste that link into a message, chat or email and send it to the people you want to include.

  6. To invite someone directly instead, type their Gmail address in the share box and tap Send. They get an email with the album link.

  7. Open the album options menu and switch on Allow others to add photos so invited people can upload their own pictures and videos.

  8. Ask everyone to open the link on their phone, tablet or computer and tap Join. From then on, any photo added shows up for the whole group.

Tips and common mistakes

Anyone holding the link can view the album, so only send it to people you trust.

Use the same album options menu to remove a person or turn off sharing when you no longer want the group to see it.

Photos you upload count toward your own Google storage, while photos other people add count toward theirs.

Give each album a specific name like Trip to Pokhara 2026 so it stays easy to find later.

Questions

Do the people I invite need a Google account?

They can open the link and view the photos in a browser without signing in. They do need to sign in with a Google account to add their own photos or videos.

Can I add more photos after I share the album?

Yes. Open the album, tap Add photos and pick new items. Everyone with the link sees the new pictures straight away.

Does the album update on other devices automatically?

Yes. As long as the person is signed in with the invited account or has the link open, new photos appear in the album on any phone, tablet or computer.
