What you need
Steps
Open Canva and start a new design at the size you need, or open an existing one. A blank square post or a 1920x1080 slide both work well.
Click the Elements tab in the left sidebar, type gradient into the search box and press Enter. Canva shows a row of ready-made gradient tiles.
For the set used here, search for @contributordanny in the Elements search box. That brings up a range of gradients you can recolour.
Click a gradient to drop it onto the page, then drag its corner handles until it covers the whole canvas edge to edge.
Right-click the gradient and choose Set image as background so it locks into the background layer and stops shifting when you add other items.
To change the colours, select the gradient and click the colour tiles in the toolbar. Pick new shades from the colour picker or type a hex code.
Rotate or flip the gradient with the toolbar buttons to change the direction of the blend, or drag the on-canvas handles to stretch it.
Add text, photos and shapes on top. If the gradient covers them, right-click it and choose Layer, then Send to back.
Tips and common mistakes
Pick two or three shades from the same family, like teal to navy, so the blend looks clean rather than muddy.
Look for a small crown icon on a gradient: that means it is a Pro element and needs a paid plan to download.
Keep text on the calmer end of the gradient so it stays easy to read.
Save a finished page as a template so your posts keep the same look.
Questions
Where do I find gradients in Canva?
Open the Elements tab and search for gradient. You can also search a contributor name like @contributordanny to see a full set of them.
Can I make a gradient with my own colours?
Yes. Add a gradient, select it, then swap the colour tiles in the toolbar for your brand colours using the colour picker or a hex code.
Is this free in Canva?
Many gradients are free, but some carry a crown icon and need Canva Pro to download. The free ones work exactly the same way.
