Steps
Sign in at drive.google.com with your Google account. You land in My Drive, which is where new folders get created.
Click the + New button in the top left corner. A menu opens with file and folder options.
Choose New folder from that menu. A small box appears with the name field already selected.
Type your folder name, replacing the highlighted Untitled folder placeholder. Pick something you will recognise in a list later.
Click Create. The folder shows up in My Drive, usually at the top of the file list.
Double-click the folder to open it, then drag files in from your desktop or another Drive window.
On the Drive phone app, tap the + button, choose Folder, type the name and tap Create.
Tips and common mistakes
Name folders by project and year, like Taxes 2025, so sorting and search stay useful.
A folder made inside a shared folder is shared with the same people by default, so check before adding private files.
Deleting a folder sends everything inside it to the trash, so move files out first.
Press Enter instead of clicking Create to save a second.
Questions
Can I create a folder inside another folder?
Yes. Open the parent folder first, then click + New and New folder. The new folder sits inside it, which is how you build a nested structure.
Can I rename or delete a folder later?
Right-click the folder and choose Rename or Remove. Removing sends the folder and its contents to the trash, where they stay for 30 days.
Why can't I see the New folder option?
You may be in Shared with me or inside a folder with view-only access. Switch to My Drive, or ask the owner for edit permission.
