What you need

Steps

  1. Open Settings, tap Camera, then tap Formats. Choose Most Compatible so new photos save as JPG instead of HEIC.

  2. Take a test photo and check it in Photos. If you share it to another device, it should now open without conversion.

  3. To convert existing HEIC photos, open the Photos app and select the picture you want to change.

  4. Tap the share button, then choose Copy Photo or Save to Files to export the image as a JPG copy.

  5. If the share sheet offers a format option, pick JPEG or Most Compatible before saving.

  6. For a single photo, open it, tap Edit, then tap the share or export option to save a JPG version.

  7. Check the saved file in Files or Photos to confirm the name ends in.jpg.

Tips and common mistakes

Most Compatible uses more storage per photo, so switch back to High Efficiency if space is tight.

Converting only makes a copy, so delete the original HEIC file afterwards if you want to free up space.

AirDrop and email usually convert HEIC automatically, so test before converting a whole album.

Questions

Will changing the camera format convert my old photos?

No. The camera setting only affects new photos you take. Existing HEIC files need to be exported or shared as JPG one by one or in a batch.

Does converting to JPG lower the quality?

JPG uses compression, so there can be a small quality loss. Keep the original HEIC file if you need the highest quality for editing.

Why do my photos still show as HEIC after changing settings?

Photos taken before the change stay HEIC. Also check that the setting saved under Settings, Camera, Formats.
