What you need

Steps

  1. Open Canva and start a new design, or open an existing one. Click Uploads in the left sidebar and upload the two photos you want to blend.

  2. Click the first photo to add it to the page. Right-click it and choose Set image as background so it fills the whole canvas.

  3. Go back to Uploads and click the second photo to drop it on top of the background image.

  4. Drag the corner handles to resize the top photo, then drag it into position over the area you want to blend.

  5. With the top photo selected, click Edit photo in the top toolbar, open Effects, then choose Blend.

  6. Pick a blend mode. Multiply darkens and mixes colours, Screen lightens, and Overlay adds contrast. Drag the intensity slider until the two photos merge smoothly.

  7. Use the Transparency slider in the toolbar if you want more of the background photo to show through.

  8. Click Share, then Download. Choose PNG for the sharpest result or JPG for a smaller file.

Tips and common mistakes

Duplicate the page before you experiment so you can compare two blend modes side by side.

Multiply works best when the top photo is dark, while Screen suits bright photos with light backgrounds.

Keep the intensity around 40 to 60 percent, since very high settings wash out faces and detail.

Blend modes apply to images, so add text and shapes after you finish blending.

Questions

Where is the Blend tool in Canva?

Select a photo on the canvas, click Edit photo, open Effects and choose Blend. The blend modes and the intensity slider appear in that panel.

Can I blend more than two photos?

Yes. Stack each photo on its own layer and give every one a blend mode and transparency setting. Move them up or down with Position, then Layer.

Why does my blended photo look washed out?

The intensity is probably too high or the wrong mode is selected. Lower the slider or switch from Screen to Multiply and check the result again.
