What you need
Steps
Open your Canva design first, then click Uploads in the left sidebar.
Click Upload files, choose your photo, and wait for it to appear in the Uploads panel.
Drag the image onto the page, or click it once to add it to the design.
To swap a template photo, select the old image and use Replace, or delete it and add your upload.
Drag the corner handles to resize the image, then drag the image itself to move it into place.
To cover the whole page, right-click the image and choose Set image as background. On the Canva app, use the image menu for the same option.
Use Crop if the photo needs trimming, then download the design or keep editing.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a high-resolution photo so it stays sharp when it fills the whole page.
Leave the important part of the photo near the centre, because Canva may crop the edges when it becomes the background.
If the image looks stretched, undo the change and resize it before you set it as the background.
Questions
Can I use a photo from my phone?
Yes. Upload it from the Canva app, or save it to your computer first and then use Upload files.
Why can't I set my image as background?
The image must be selected on the page first. If the option is missing, add the image from Uploads, then right-click it or use the image menu.
Does adding my own image change the template?
It only changes your copy of the design. The original Canva template stays the same.
