What you need

Steps

  1. Check how the 25 mark essay is marked. Roughly half the credit comes from accurate biology knowledge (AO1) and half from explaining importance and making synoptic links (AO2).

  2. Choose a title you can support with four or five topics from different parts of the specification, so the links come easily.

  3. Plan for about five minutes. Write one line per paragraph naming the molecule or process you will use and the importance point you will make.

  4. Build each paragraph as a chain. Name the molecule or process, give the exact mechanism, then say why it matters for the organism.

  5. Swap GCSE wording for A Level detail. Instead of saying proteins are important, give the tertiary structure, the specific bonds involved and the role they allow.

  6. Use the four core examples the video highlights: proteins, ATP, oxygen and glucose. Each one links to a large amount of AO1 content.

  7. End every paragraph with an importance sentence that ties back to the essay title, rather than stopping at description.

  8. Write for around 25 to 30 minutes, then spend the last few minutes checking spelling of key terms and that each paragraph answers the title.

Tips and common mistakes

Vague statements like proteins are important get capped at GCSE level, so always follow them with a mechanism.

Aim for three or four well developed points with synoptic links rather than listing everything you know.

Practise full essay titles under timed conditions so the planning stage becomes quick.

Re-read the title before you finish to check you answered it and did not just write about the topic.

Questions

How long should the AQA Biology essay be?

There is no fixed length. Four or five developed paragraphs with clear mechanism and importance usually score better than a long list of shallow points, since the essay is worth 25 marks.

Do I need an introduction and conclusion?

A short one or two sentence introduction and a closing sentence that links back to the title are enough. Do not spend time on long introductions you could use for biology.

What is the biggest mistake students make?

Stopping at description. Explaining why something matters, and linking it to another area of the specification, is what moves an answer into the top bands.
