What you need

Steps

  1. Read the essay prompt twice and underline the key words, the topic and any instruction words like discuss or agree. Make sure you know exactly what you are being asked before you type anything.

  2. Spend two minutes planning. Pick two main reasons or examples you can explain in plain words, and note them in one line each so you do not change direction mid essay.

  3. Write the introduction in two sentences. Paraphrase the prompt in your own words, then state your position clearly so the reader knows what the essay will argue.

  4. Start body paragraph one with a topic sentence that states your first reason. Follow it with one or two sentences explaining why, then a short example or detail.

  5. Write body paragraph two the same way, using your second reason. Keep one idea per paragraph and link it back to the question so the essay stays on topic.

  6. Finish with a two sentence conclusion. Restate your position in new wording and sum up both reasons without adding any new arguments.

  7. Check your word count and aim for 200 to 300 words. Longer is not better here. Cut repeated ideas rather than adding more points.

  8. Use the last three or four minutes to proofread. Fix spelling, capital letters, full stops, commas and any sentence that runs too long or loses its verb.

Tips and common mistakes

Short, correct sentences score better than long sentences that break down in the middle.

Adapt any template to the actual question, because content and development are scored too.

Learn to touch type, since slow typing is the main reason people run out of time.

Practise full essays with a 20 minute timer at least three times before test day.

Questions

How many words should a PTE essay be?

Aim for 200 to 300 words. This gives you enough room for an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion within the 20 minute limit.

Can I use a memorised template?

Yes, a structure template is fine, but the content must answer the exact question. A template with no relevant ideas will lose marks on content and development.

Do I need examples in each paragraph?

A short example or detail makes your point clearer, but it does not need to be a real statistic. A simple, believable situation works well.
