What you need

Steps

  1. Check which set text and poetry cluster your exam board sets for Paper 2. For AQA that means one modern text, either prose or drama, plus the anthology cluster your class has studied.

  2. Build a one-page sheet per text listing themes, main characters and six to eight short quotes. Keep each quote to under ten words so it is easy to learn and recall under pressure.

  3. Practise planning past paper questions in five minutes. Underline the key words, choose three or four points, and note the short quote you would use for each one.

  4. Write one full answer under timed conditions. Allow about 45 minutes for the modern text, 35 for the anthology question and 45 for unseen poetry.

  5. Mark your answer against the mark scheme. Highlight where you analysed a quote, commented on form or structure, and linked the text to its context.

  6. Revise unseen poetry separately. Read a poem you have never seen for five minutes, then write one paragraph about what the poet does with a single image or line.

  7. Test yourself on quotes the night before. Say each quote aloud and name the text, character and moment it comes from without looking at your notes.

Tips and common mistakes

Rereading the text feels productive but recall practice works better, so cover your notes and write what you remember.

Learn fewer quotes well and be ready to use each one for several different questions.

Weave context into your point as you go rather than saving it for a separate sentence at the end.

Check your exam board's website for the exact anthology cluster and recent past papers.

Questions

How long is the Paper 2 exam?

For AQA it is 2 hours 15 minutes and covers modern texts, the poetry anthology and unseen poetry. Check your own board's paper, as timings and sections differ.

How many quotes should I learn?

Six to eight short quotes per text is usually enough if you know them well and can analyse the language closely. A long quote you cannot unpack is less useful.

Can I use the same quote for different questions?

Yes, as long as it genuinely answers the question. Flexible quotes that touch on several themes save you memory space.
