Steps

  1. Sit in the driver's seat and find the wiper stalk on the right side of the steering column. The symbols on it show a fan shape for the front wipers and a rectangle for the rear.

  2. Push the lever up and hold it for a single sweep. This is MIST, and it springs back to off when you let go. Use it for light drizzle or a damp windscreen.

  3. Leave the lever in the middle for OFF. The wipers stop wherever they are, so let a full sweep finish before you switch off.

  4. Move the lever down one notch for INT, the intermittent setting. The wipers sweep, pause, then sweep again, which is ideal for steady light rain.

  5. Twist the small rotary band on the stalk while in INT to shorten or lengthen the pause. Set a short pause for heavier drizzle and a long pause for a fine spray.

  6. Move the lever down one more notch for LO and a further notch for HI. LO is your normal rain speed and HI is for heavy rain or spray from traffic.

  7. Pull the lever toward you to spray washer fluid on the windscreen. The wipers run a few sweeps with the spray and then stop.

  8. Twist the collar or the end of the stalk to switch on the rear wiper. Twist it further, or push the end, to spray the rear washer.

  9. Return the stalk to OFF and the rear setting to its rest position once the rain stops. Top up the washer bottle under the bonnet when the spray turns weak.

Tips and common mistakes

Never run the wipers on a dry windscreen, because grit scratches the glass and wears the blades.

Wet the glass with the washer first if the car has been sitting in dust or pollen.

Change the blades once they leave streaks or chatter, which usually means a hardened rubber edge.

Use INT rather than LO in light rain so the blades do not drag across a nearly dry screen.

Questions

What does INT mean on the wiper stalk?

INT stands for intermittent. The wipers sweep once, pause for a set time, then sweep again, and you can change that pause with the rotary band on the stalk.

How do I turn off the rear wiper?

Twist the collar or the end of the stalk back to its rest position. The rear wiper only runs when you select it, so it will not come on by itself.

Why do my wipers squeak or skip?

The blades are usually worn, dirty or pressed against a dry screen. Wipe the rubber edge with a damp cloth and replace the blades if the noise continues.
