What you need
Steps
Open the two apps you want to use side by side, for example Settings and your web browser.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold until the recent apps view opens.
Press and hold the app icon at the top of one recent app card, then tap the split screen option.
Choose the second app from the recent apps list or from your installed apps. Both apps now share the screen.
Drag the bar between the two windows left or right to change how much space each app gets.
To try desktop mode, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings and tap Desktop mode.
Drag a window by its top bar to the left or right edge of the screen and release it when it snaps into place.
Drag the second app window to the opposite edge so the two windows fill the screen.
Tap the top of an app to return it to full screen, or drag the divider to the edge to close split screen.
Tips and common mistakes
If the split screen option is greyed out or missing, that app does not support it, so try another one.
Desktop mode stays on until you tap its tile again in Quick Settings, so apps keep opening in windows.
Turn the tablet to landscape for wider windows and easier dragging.
The divider bar only works when both apps are in split screen, not in desktop mode.
Questions
Why can't I find the split screen option?
Some apps block split screen, so the option does not appear for them. Try holding the icon of a different app, such as Settings or Chrome.
Do I have to turn on desktop mode to use split screen?
No. Split screen works in normal tablet mode using recent apps. Desktop mode is only needed if you want free-floating windows you can drag to the screen edges.
How do I get back to one app?
Tap the top bar of the app you want to keep and choose full screen, or drag the divider bar all the way to one side.
