Steps
Sign in at notion.so or open the Notion app and pick a workspace name. Click New page in the sidebar to start with a blank page.
Look at the sidebar on the left. Every page you create sits there, and you can drag pages inside each other to make subpages.
Click the page title at the top and type a name. Press Enter, then click under the title to start writing body text.
Decide what you want to build first: meeting notes, a to-do list, a reading list or a project hub. Start with one page and one purpose.
Format text by highlighting it and using the popup menu for bold, italic, headings and lists. Type # and a space for a heading, - and a space for a bullet.
Type a forward slash on an empty line to open the command menu. Search for blocks like To-do list, Callout, Divider or Image and press Enter to insert one.
Hover over a block and use the six-dot handle to drag it up or down. Use the same handle menu to duplicate, delete or turn a block into another type.
Create a database by typing /database and choosing Table. Give it columns like Name, Status and Due date, then add a few rows.
Add a second view to the database, such as Board or Calendar, and switch between views with the tabs at the top.
Tips and common mistakes
Press Ctrl or Cmd and P to open search and jump to any page without scrolling the sidebar.
Type / at the start of a line, not in the middle of a sentence, or the command menu may not appear.
Keep your first workspace small. One page with three blocks beats ten empty pages you never fill.
Use the To-do block for quick checklists and a database only when you need sorting, filters or dates.
Questions
Is Notion free for beginners?
Yes, the personal plan is free and covers pages, blocks and databases for one person. You only pay if you need team features or more file uploads.
Do I need to learn databases straight away?
No. Pages and blocks cover most note-taking needs. Add a database once you want to track items with statuses, dates or filters.
Can I use Notion on my phone?
Yes, the mobile app has the same pages and databases. The slash menu works there too, but building databases is easier on a computer.
