Steps
Update your iPad first. Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update, and install iPadOS 26 if it is available for your model.
Open the first app you want on screen. It opens full screen by default.
Turn on windowed apps. Go to Settings, then Multitasking & Gestures, and choose Windowed Apps. The option only appears on supported iPads.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to show the Dock, then drag a second app icon out of the Dock and drop it on the left or right edge of the screen. The two windows snap side by side.
Resize a window by dragging its corner or edge. Drag the divider between two windows to give one app more room.
Add a third or fourth app by dragging more icons out of the Dock. Shrink the existing windows so all of them fit on screen at once.
Move windows around by dragging their top bar. Use the controls in the top left corner of a window to close it or send it back to the App Switcher.
Tap the window control to make one app full screen again, or open the App Switcher to jump between saved layouts.
Tips and common mistakes
Not every app can be resized or shown in a small window, so test your main apps first.
Older iPads that do not get windowed apps still offer Split View with two apps and Slide Over for a quick third one.
Dragging text, photos or links from one window to another saves a lot of copying and pasting.
A hardware keyboard makes it easier to move between windows with Command and Tab.
Questions
How many apps can I use at once?
On supported iPads with iPadOS 26 you can arrange up to four windows on screen together. How many fit comfortably depends on your screen size and how small each app can shrink.
Why can I not find the windowed apps setting?
Your iPad model probably does not support the new windowing system. Check for the setting under Settings, then Multitasking & Gestures. If it is missing, use Split View and Slide Over instead.
Does split screen work with every app?
No. Most Apple apps and many popular third party apps work, but some games and older apps only run full screen.
