Steps
Open Settings, tap General, then Software Update. Install any update that is waiting, because split screen bugs are often fixed in point releases.
In Settings, go to Home Screen & Multitasking (called Multitasking & Gestures on older iPads) and open the Multitasking section.
Choose Multitasking, not Full Screen Apps. If Full Screen Apps is selected, the drag gesture and the three dots at the top of apps will not open a second window.
Open your first app, then swipe up slowly from the bottom edge of the screen and hold until the Dock appears. Do not lift your finger yet.
Drag a second app icon out of the Dock to the left or right edge of the screen, then let go when the screen splits.
Drag the black divider in the middle to change how much space each app gets, and drag it fully to one side to close that app.
If nothing happens, restart the iPad by holding the top button and a volume button until the slider appears, then try the drag again.
Still stuck? Force close the app by swiping up from the bottom and flicking its card away, then reopen it and repeat the drag.
Tips and common mistakes
Both apps must support Split View, so check by trying a built-in app such as Safari or Notes first.
Apps that only have an iPhone version cannot split, but you can still open them in Slide Over.
Turn off Accessibility, then Zoom, if your drag gestures keep getting ignored.
Keep the Dock visible while you drag, or the second app will not launch into Split View.
Questions
Why does the three-dot menu not show on my apps?
That menu only appears in apps that support multitasking and only when Multitasking is selected in Settings. A plain Full Screen Apps setting hides it.
What is the difference between Split View and Slide Over?
Split View shows two apps side by side, both resizable. Slide Over puts a narrower app in a floating panel over the first one, which you can swipe away.
Do I need Stage Manager for split screen?
No. Split View works without Stage Manager and is the simpler option on most iPads.
