What you need
Steps
Download the free pretzel pattern from the creator's website and print it at 100 percent. Cut out the paper template.
Trace the pretzel shape twice onto wool blend felt with fabric chalk and cut both pieces out. Cut one icing shape from a contrasting felt.
Pin the icing piece to the front pretzel shape and stitch around its edge with small, even stitches.
Sew seed beads onto the icing in a row or a scattered pattern. Use doubled thread and bring the needle up through the felt for each bead.
Fold a 4 inch piece of twine in half and stitch the two ends to the top of the front piece to make the hanging loop.
Place the front and back pretzel shapes together with the loop tucked inside. Stitch around the outer edge and leave a 1 inch gap for stuffing.
Pull small pieces of fiber fill through the gap and push them into the curved ends. Do not overstuff or the seams will stretch.
Sew the gap closed with small stitches and trim any loose threads. Press the ornament gently into shape.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a sharp needle and thread that matches the felt so the stitches blend into the fabric.
Knot the bead thread securely on the back so the beads stay on the ornament.
Keep the stuffing light and even so the pretzel holds its curved shape.
Needles and small scissors are sharp, so keep your fingers clear and store them safely between sessions.
Questions
Do I need a sewing machine?
No. The whole ornament is hand sewn with a needle and thread, which makes it a good project for small felt scraps.
Can I use acrylic craft felt instead of wool blend felt?
Wool blend felt gives a firmer, longer lasting ornament. Acrylic craft felt works for practice but can pill and stretch over time.
How do I hang the finished ornament?
Thread the twine loop over a tree branch or tie a small ribbon through the loop to attach it.
