How to make an autumn leaf bunting from fabric scraps

Make a hanging garland of fabric leaves with felt backing, simple hand embroidery and clear sequin raindrops. It suits beginners who can do a running stitch and want to use up scraps. You only need small pieces of fabric, felt, floss and something to string the leaves on.

What you need

Steps

  1. Draw a simple leaf shape about 10 cm long on paper and cut it out. Use this as your template for every flag.

  2. Pin the template to a fabric scrap and cut around it. Cut a matching leaf from felt for the backing of each piece.

  3. Pin the felt leaf to the wrong side of the fabric leaf. Sew around the edge with small running stitches, about 3 mm long.

  4. Stitch a stem down the centre of the leaf with whipped backstitch. Add a few straight stitches as veins.

  5. Sew clear sequins onto the leaf with three or four stitches through each hole. Space them out like raindrops.

  6. Repeat for as many leaves as you want, mixing the fabric colours. Six to eight leaves make a short mantle garland.

  7. Lay the leaves in a row and space them evenly along twine, ribbon or bias tape. Leave about 15 cm spare at each end for tying.

  8. Stitch or glue each leaf to the tape, or fold the tape over the top edge and sew it down. Hang the bunting and adjust the spacing.

Tips and common mistakes

Knot your floss on the felt side so the front of the leaf stays neat.

Press the fabric scraps flat before cutting so the finished leaves do not curl.

Keep needles in a pin cushion and cut away from your fingers, since this project uses sharp tools.

Try the sequin layout before you sew so you can move them without unpicking.

Questions

Do I need a sewing machine?

No. The whole bunting is hand sewn, and a running stitch through felt is strong enough for hanging.

How big should each leaf be?

Around 10 cm long is comfortable to hold and embroider. Much smaller leaves are fiddly and need fewer sequins.

What can I use instead of felt?

Two layers of cotton with fusible interfacing between them gives a similar firm backing.
