What you need

Steps

  1. Draw a simple leaf shape on card and cut it out to use as a template. Make it about 3 to 4 inches long.

  2. Pin the template to a scrap of felt and cut around it. Cut two matching leaves for each leaf in the garland.

  3. If you want veining, stitch a few straight lines down the centre of one leaf with contrasting thread. Keep the stitches loose.

  4. Place the two leaf shapes together with the stitched side facing out. Sew around the edges with a blanket stitch, or run a thin line of fabric glue and press the layers together.

  5. Leave a small gap at the top of each leaf for the hanging loop. Fold a 3 inch piece of twine in half and tuck the loop into the gap.

  6. Sew or glue the gap closed, catching the twine loop so it is secure. Trim any loose threads.

  7. Thread a long piece of twine onto a needle or use a small hook. Push it through each leaf loop and slide the leaves along, spacing them 4 to 6 inches apart.

  8. Tie a loop at each end of the garland for hanging. Drape it across a mantel, shelf or doorway.

Tips and common mistakes

Use pinking shears on felt edges to reduce fraying and add a decorative zigzag finish.

Mix two or three shades of felt so the garland looks fuller and more natural.

Keep fingers out of the scissor path and put needles back in a pin cushion when you stop.

Test fabric glue on a felt scrap first so it does not soak through and stain the front.

Questions

What kind of felt works best?

Acrylic craft felt is cheap, easy to cut and holds its shape well. Wool felt is thicker and softer but costs more.

How many leaves do I need?

For a 6 foot garland, make 7 to 9 leaves and space them 6 to 8 inches apart. Add more leaves for a fuller look.

Can I make this without sewing?

Yes. Use fabric glue instead of a needle and thread, and glue the twine loop between the two leaf layers.
