Steps

  1. Open the Capital One website in your browser and find the login form. Enter your username and password, then click the sign in button.

  2. Once you are logged in, you will see all your accounts listed, including checking accounts and credit cards. Find the credit card you want to set up.

  3. Click the View Account button next to that credit card. The card page opens with your balance and payment options.

  4. On the credit card page, click the I want to button. A menu of actions appears.

  5. Find the Payments section in that menu and click Setup Autopay.

  6. Choose the amount to pay each month. Statement balance pays the card off in full, but you must pay at least the minimum payment.

  7. Select the payment date. Click choose date and pick the day of the month you want the payment to go out, such as the 11th.

  8. Choose where the money comes from. Pick a Capital One 360 checking account, or link an external bank account if you prefer.

  9. Check the confirmation screen for the amount, date and funding account, then submit to turn autopay on.

Tips and common mistakes

Pick a payment date a few days before the due date so the payment clears on time.

Paying the statement balance avoids interest, while the minimum payment keeps the account current but leaves a balance.

Keep enough money in the funding account before each payment date to avoid a returned payment fee.

Review the autopay settings after you change banks or get a new card.

Questions

Can I use a bank account that is not with Capital One?

Yes. You can link an external bank account during setup and pay from it instead of a Capital One 360 account.

What happens if I choose the minimum payment?

Autopay will take only the minimum each month, so the rest of the balance carries over and may collect interest.

How do I change or cancel autopay later?

Go back to the card page, open the I want to menu and the Payments section, then edit or turn off the autopay settings.
