Steps
Decide what the planner will hold before you write anything. Split it into work tasks, business admin and notes so each section has a clear job.
Make a cover page with your name, the year and one line about the planner's purpose. Keep it simple so you can start using the pages.
Add tabs to the edge of the book for the key sections, such as monthly, index and notes. Place them so they line up and do not cover writing space.
Use highlighters on section headers and page titles to make them easy to spot. Pick one colour per section and keep it the same all year.
Create a key page that lists every symbol and colour you plan to use, such as a dot for a task and a star for a deadline.
Number the note pages and write each section name with its page numbers in the index. Add entries as you go so the index stays useful.
Fill in the monthly pages with fixed dates first: paydays, bills, meetings and business admin days. Then add the tasks you want to finish that month.
Set up the note pages with a title, date and a short list for each meeting, project or client. Leave space under each heading for follow-up actions.
Tips and common mistakes
Test every pen and highlighter on a spare page at the back to check for bleed through.
Keep the key to six symbols or fewer so you actually remember them.
Leave a few blank pages between sections for notes that grow.
Use pencil for dates that may change.
Questions
What is a Hobonichi A6 Day Free planner?
It is a small undated planner with monthly calendars and plenty of blank note pages. You add your own dates and section names.
Do I need special pens for this setup?
No. A fine liner or gel pen works, but test it first because thin planner paper can bleed.
Can I use this setup in a different notebook?
Yes. Copy the same cover, tabs, key and index into any A6 notebook.
