How to replace wiper blade refills on a Toyota Prius C

Swap the rubber refill inside your wiper blade instead of buying a whole new blade. This suits any driver with a worn, streaky wiper and works on many car makes and models. You only need the right refill, cut to length if needed, and a few minutes at the front of the car.

What you need

Steps

  1. Park on a level surface and turn the ignition off. Pull the wiper arm up so the blade stands away from the glass.

  2. Look along the blade for the small locking tab or clip that holds the rubber refill in the metal frame.

  3. Press or lift the tab and slide the old rubber refill out of the blade frame. Note which way the grooves face.

  4. Compare the old refill with the new one. If you bought a universal 28 inch refill, cut it to the same length as the old piece.

  5. Feed the new refill into the frame starting from the open end, matching the groove direction of the old one.

  6. Push the refill through until it sits flush at both ends and the locking tab clicks back into its slot.

  7. Wipe the rubber with a damp cloth to remove dust, then lower the wiper arm gently onto the glass.

  8. Run the wipers with washer fluid and check for streaks or chatter. Repeat on the other side if needed.

Tips and common mistakes

Never let the bare wiper arm snap back onto the glass, as it can crack the windshield.

Keep the old refill until the new one is fitted so you can match its length and groove direction.

If the new refill will not slide in, check the locking tab is fully open and the grooves line up.

Questions

Do I need to replace the whole blade or just the refill?

If the metal frame and arm are in good shape, a refill is enough. Replace the whole blade if the frame is bent or the connector is worn.

Will this work on my car if it is not a Prius C?

The same push-tab and slide-out method is used on many cars. Check your owner's manual or the blade frame for the exact release point.

How often should I change wiper refills?

Most makers suggest every 6 to 12 months, or sooner if the blades streak, chatter or leave gaps on the glass.
