Steps
Park on level ground, turn the engine off and set the parking brake. Pull both wiper arms up and away from the windshield until they stand on their own.
Lay a towel on the glass under each arm. If a metal arm snaps down onto bare glass it can crack the windshield.
Check the length printed on the old blades, or look up the sizes in your owner's manual. The two sides are often different lengths, so label them driver and passenger.
Hold the arm with one hand. Press the small tab on the plastic connector underneath, then slide the blade down and off the hook.
Line up the new blade with the hook, push it on until the tab clicks into place, then tug it gently to confirm it is locked.
Lower the arm slowly back to the glass. Repeat the same steps on the other side with its matching blade.
Sit in the driver's seat and run the wipers on low with washer fluid. Check for streaks, chatter or a blade that lifts at the ends.
Tips and common mistakes
Replace both blades at the same time so they wear evenly and clear the glass together.
Never let a wiper arm drop onto dry glass without a blade fitted, as the spring load can crack it.
Wipe the rubber edge with a damp cloth before fitting to remove the protective coating.
Change blades every 6 to 12 months, or sooner if they skip, squeak or leave streaks.
Questions
How do I know which wiper blade size my 4Runner needs?
Read the length printed on the old blade, or check the wiper section of your owner's manual. Many auto parts stores also list sizes by year, make and model.
Can I replace just one blade?
You can, but the pair wears at the same rate. Fitting both keeps the windshield clearing evenly and saves you a second job soon after.
Why do my new wipers chatter across the glass?
Usually the arm is bent or the glass is dirty and waxed. Clean the windshield with glass cleaner and check that the blade clip is fully seated.
