What you need

Steps

  1. Park the car and switch off the ignition so the rear wiper cannot move. Check the wiper arm is resting flat against the rear window.

  2. Lift the rear wiper arm away from the glass until it stays up on its own. Do not let it snap back down onto the window.

  3. Release the old blade from the arm. On most Volvo rear arms the blade unclips from the hook or slides off the end of the arm.

  4. Pull the old blade clear of the arm and set it aside. Keep hold of the arm so it does not spring back onto the glass.

  5. Line up the new blade with the arm and push or clip it into place until it clicks or seats fully.

  6. Check the blade is locked on by giving it a gentle tug. It should not slide or come loose from the arm.

  7. Lower the arm slowly until the blade sits flat on the rear window.

  8. Switch on the ignition and run the rear wiper once to check it sweeps cleanly and parks in the right spot.

Tips and common mistakes

Match the blade to your exact model and year, as rear arm fittings differ between Volvos.

Never let the bare wiper arm drop onto the glass, as it can crack the rear window.

If the new blade chatters or misses spots, check it is fully seated on the arm before buying another.

Questions

Do I need any tools for this job?

No. The rear blade clips or slides off the arm by hand on these Volvo models, so no tools are needed.

How often should I replace the rear wiper blade?

Replace it when it streaks, chatters or leaves gaps, or about once a year if you use it often.

Will this work on my S60 or V90?

The same basic method applies to the XC40, XC60, XC90, V60, V90, S60 and S90, but confirm the blade part number for your car.
