Steps
Park the car, switch off the ignition and lift the rear wiper arm away from the glass so it stands up on its hinge.
Stick a strip of masking tape on the glass along the blade edge and mark the arm position, so the new arm parks in the same spot.
Flip up the small plastic cap at the base of the arm and undo the nut on the wiper spindle with a socket. Keep the nut safe.
If the arm will not lift off by hand, fit a wiper arm puller over the spindle and tighten it until the arm pops free. Never pry with a screwdriver against the glass.
Clean the splined spindle with a cloth and a little silicone spray so the new arm slides on and seats fully.
Line the new arm up with your tape mark, push it onto the splines and fit the nut. Tighten it firmly but do not overtighten.
Snap the plastic cap back on, fold the arm down and fit the blade if your kit does not already include one.
Run the rear wiper once and check it parks at the bottom of the glass and clears the whole window. Move it one spline if it sits wrong.
Tips and common mistakes
Mark the old arm position with tape before you remove it, or the new arm may park too high or too low on the glass.
Do not hammer the arm or lever it with a screwdriver, as the rear glass and the spindle thread damage easily.
Check the rear washer jet still points at the window after refitting the arm.
Wipe the spindle splines clean so the new arm grips properly and does not slip later.
Questions
Do I need a special puller to get the old arm off?
Often yes. The arm seizes onto the splined spindle, and a wiper arm puller removes it evenly without bending the arm or cracking the glass.
How tight should the spindle nut be?
Tight enough that the arm cannot rock on the splines, but stop before you crush the plastic base. Check it again after a week of use.
Can I fit just the blade instead of the whole arm?
Yes, if only the rubber is worn. Replace the full arm assembly when the spring is weak, the arm is bent or the splines are slipping.
