Steps
Park on level ground and open the door you are working on. Disconnect the negative battery terminal if you plan to touch any wiring.
Pry off the small plastic cover inside the door pull and remove the Phillips screw underneath. Then remove the screw in the armrest recess.
Work a trim tool or wrapped flathead around the bottom edge of the door panel. Pop the plastic clips free, working up both sides.
Lift the panel up and away from the door. Unhook the door release cable and unplug the window switch connector if fitted.
Peel back the plastic moisture barrier just enough to reach the handle area. Keep the butyl sealant clean so it sticks again later.
Look through the access hole and find the two 10 mm nuts or bolts holding the handle. Hold the handle from outside and undo them.
Disconnect the rod from the handle lever. Slide the old handle out of the door skin and set it aside.
Fit the new handle into the opening and clip the rod back onto the lever. Check the handle moves freely before tightening.
Tighten the 10 mm nuts or bolts snugly. Reconnect the release cable and window switch, then press the moisture barrier back down.
Line up the panel clips and press the door panel firmly into place. Refit the screws and covers, then test the handle from outside.
Tips and common mistakes
Warm the plastic clips with a heat gun on low if they feel brittle, cold clips snap easily.
Tape the door edge below the handle with masking tape so the handle does not scratch the paint as it comes out.
Do not overtighten the 10 mm nuts, the handle bracket is plastic and strips easily.
Test the handle and lock several times before refitting the door panel fully.
Questions
Do I have to remove the whole door panel?
Yes, on the Mazda 3 BK the handle fasteners are only reachable from inside the door, so the panel has to come off.
Why does my new handle feel loose?
The rod clip is probably not seated fully on the lever, or the mounting nuts are not tight. Recheck both before closing up.
Can I reuse the old door panel clips?
Sometimes, but buy a few spare clips first. Old clips often break or lose their grip when removed.
