Park on a level surface and switch off the engine. Let the engine bay cool down before you touch anything.
Open the hood and find the air filter housing. On the Forester it is the large black plastic box near the front of the engine bay.
Release the clips or latches holding the top of the housing. On this model they are simple clips you can undo by hand, no tools needed.
Lift the top of the housing and pull out the old filter. Note which way it sits so the new one goes in the same way.
Wipe out any dust or leaves inside the lower half of the housing with a clean cloth.
Drop the new CA12295 filter into the housing with the rubber edge facing the same way as the old one.
Set the lid back on and close the clips until they click. Make sure the lid sits flush all the way round.
Close the hood and start the engine to confirm it runs normally.

Never run the engine with the housing open, since unfiltered air and dirt can get inside.
