How to replace the cabin air filter in a VW Atlas

Swap the cabin air filter in a Volkswagen Atlas in about five minutes with no tools. The filter sits behind the glovebox, so you only need to drop the glovebox down, pull the old filter and slide in a new one. It suits any Atlas owner who wants cleaner air and a cheaper service bill.

Steps

  1. Buy the correct cabin filter for your Atlas. Mann makes the MQB pollen filter used in many VW models, so match the part to your model year before you start.

  2. Park on a flat surface and turn the engine off. Empty the glovebox so nothing falls out when you lower it.

  3. Open the glovebox and push in both side walls so the stop tabs clear the dashboard. Let the glovebox swing all the way down.

  4. Find the rectangular filter cover behind the glovebox. Release the clips or slide the cover off to expose the old filter.

  5. Pull the old filter straight out and note which way the airflow arrow points. Wipe any leaves or dust from the housing with a cloth or vacuum.

  6. Slide the new filter in with the airflow arrow pointing the same way as the old one. Push it fully into the slot so it sits flat.

  7. Refit the filter cover and click the clips back into place. Check the cover is seated evenly.

  8. Lift the glovebox back up and push the side walls in until the stop tabs snap into the dashboard. Close it and test the movement.

Tips and common mistakes

Change the filter every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, or sooner if you drive on dusty roads.

If the new filter fights going in, the airflow arrow is probably facing the wrong way.

Never force the glovebox tabs, since the plastic can crack in cold weather.

Questions

Do I need any tools to change the Atlas cabin filter?

No. The job is done by hand, and the filter sits behind the glovebox with a clip-on cover.

How often should I replace the cabin air filter?

VW recommends roughly every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Dusty or pollen-heavy areas call for the shorter end of that range.

Why does my AC still smell after changing the filter?

Dust and mould can sit in the vents and evaporator. Run the fan on high with the windows down and consider a vent cleaner if the smell stays.
