What you need
Steps
Park on level ground, set the parking brake and loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels a half turn before lifting the car.
Jack up the front of the car and place jack stands under the frame rails. Never work under a car held only by a jack.
Remove the lug nuts and pull off the front wheels. Keep the nuts in a tray so you do not lose them.
Unbolt the two caliper guide bolts with a socket and lift the caliper off the rotor. Hang it with a bungee or wire so the brake hose is not stretched.
Pull the old pads out of the caliper bracket. Note which pad has the wear indicator so the new one goes in the same spot.
Clean the bracket with brake cleaner and a wire brush. Check the rotor for deep grooves or heavy rust and replace it if worn.
Push the caliper piston back into its bore with a retractor or C-clamp. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap first and watch the level.
Fit the new pads with any shims or clips, add a little brake grease to the pad ears and guide pins, then slide the caliper back on.
Tighten the guide bolts to the torque in your owner's manual, refit the wheel and lower the car. Repeat on the other side.
Press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm, then check the fluid level and take a slow test drive at low speed.
Tips and common mistakes
Brake dust can irritate your skin and lungs, so wear gloves and a mask and work in a ventilated space.
Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose, as it can crack and cause a fluid leak.
Pump the pedal before driving off, because the first press after a pad change can go to the floor.
Bed in new pads with a few gentle stops from 30 mph, then let them cool.
Questions
Do I need to replace the rotors too?
Only if they are below the minimum thickness, deeply scored or badly rusted. Measure them with a caliper or have a shop check them.
How do I know when the front pads are worn?
A squeal from the wear indicator, a soft pedal or less than 3mm of pad material left means it is time to change them.
Can I do one side at a time?
Yes, but always replace pads on both front wheels as a set so braking stays even.
