How to bleed the hydraulic disc brakes on a Surron Ultra Bee

You push fresh fluid up through the brake line to clear trapped air, so the lever feels firm again. It suits anyone with a Surron Ultra Bee or a similar e-bike who has a spongy or soft brake. You need the correct fluid and a basic bleed kit.

What you need

Steps

  1. Check the lever body or the brake maker's spec to see whether your system takes mineral oil or DOT fluid. Buy only that fluid and never mix the two.

  2. Put the bike upright in a stand so the lever sits high and the caliper sits low. Lay a rag under the caliper to catch drips.

  3. Take the brake pads out and slide a bleed block into the caliper. This keeps the pistons from creeping out while you pump.

  4. Fill the syringe with fresh fluid and fit it to the caliper bleed nipple with a short hose. Open the nipple about half a turn with a spanner.

  5. Push fluid slowly up through the line until it reaches the lever reservoir. Tap the hose and caliper with a screwdriver handle to free bubbles.

  6. Close the nipple, then pull a little vacuum on the syringe to check for air. Repeat the push and pull until no bubbles come through.

  7. Top up the lever reservoir, fit the diaphragm and cap, and wipe off any spilled fluid straight away.

  8. Refit the pads and wheel, pump the lever until it feels firm, then test the brakes at walking pace before a real ride.

Tips and common mistakes

DOT fluid damages paint and skin, so wear gloves and glasses and rinse any spill with water at once.

Air often hides in the caliper and the highest loop of hose, so tap both while you push fluid through.

If the lever still feels soft after two full passes, air is probably getting in at a loose nipple or a worn hose fitting.

Questions

How often should I bleed the brakes?

Once a year for normal riding, or sooner if the lever feels spongy or the fluid looks dark. E-bikes are heavier, so brakes work harder than on a push bike.

Can I use DOT fluid in a mineral oil system?

No. The seals will swell and the brake can fail. Always match the fluid to the brake model printed on the lever or caliper.

Why is my lever still soft after bleeding?

Trapped air or a small leak is the usual cause. Check the hose fittings and nipple, then bleed again from the caliper up.
