What you need
Steps
Turn off climate control in the touchscreen so the blower stops running while you work in the footwell.
Move the passenger seat fully back and pull back the carpet in the passenger footwell to reach the panel under the glovebox.
Release the retaining clips or the 6 mm screw on the footwell panel, then lower and set the panel aside.
Pry off the narrow side panel at the outer edge of the footwell with the plastic trim tool. Work slowly so you do not crack the tabs.
Unclip the cabin-filter cover and pull it down to expose the two filter slots.
Slide both old filters out, noting which arrow direction faces the rear of the car.
Check the airflow arrows on the new filters. Both arrows must point toward the rear of the vehicle.
Push the first new filter into the upper slot, then slide the second into the lower slot, keeping the arrows facing rear.
Refit the filter cover, the side panel and the footwell panel, and press the carpet back into place.
Reset the cabin filter maintenance interval in the service menu on the touchscreen.
Tips and common mistakes
Tesla generally recommends replacing the filters every two years, so write the date on the new filter.
The side panel is the hardest part. Warm the plastic or use a proper trim tool instead of a screwdriver to avoid broken tabs.
Double-check the arrow direction before you close everything up. A backwards filter cuts airflow.
Some builds use tabs instead of a screw on the footwell panel, so look before you reach for the socket.
Questions
Do I need to disconnect the battery?
No. Turning off climate control is enough for this job. The filters sit behind plastic panels with no live wiring to touch.
How many filters does a Model Y take?
Two in-cabin filters, stacked in the footwell housing. Tesla sells them individually, so buy two.
Which way do the arrows point?
Both airflow arrows face the rear of the vehicle. Match the old filters if you are unsure.
