What you need
Steps
Lay out your playing cards face down so the printed side is hidden. Pick paper scraps that match the colours of your journal or the month you are planning.
Sort the scraps into colour groups and cut them into strips about 1 inch wide. Keep a mix of widths so the finished card looks layered rather than flat.
Trim each strip to the width of the card, then lay the strips on top without gluing. Move them around until the arrangement looks right to you.
Glue the strips down one at a time, starting at an edge and working across. Smooth each strip with your fingers so no air bubbles or lifted corners remain.
Punch a few shapes from leftover scraps, such as tags, circles or small labels. Glue these on top of the strips as the main focal point of the card.
Add one more layer if the card looks plain, like a die-cut word, a sticker or a stamped phrase. Keep it near the centre so the card still reads clearly.
Press the finished card under a heavy book for a few minutes so the glue sets flat. Repeat the same layout on the rest of the pack to make a matching set.
Store the cards in a small box or bag until you need them, then tuck one into a journal pocket or clip it to a planner page.
Tips and common mistakes
Work on a scrap sheet of paper so glue and punch offcuts do not mark your table.
Use a glue stick for thin strips and liquid glue only for heavier die-cuts, or the paper will wrinkle.
Punch shapes before gluing the strips down, since punching through several glued layers can jam the tool.
Keep the punch and craft knife away from the edge of your fingers and cut on a mat, not in your hand.
Questions
Do I need a die-cutting machine for this?
No. Paper punches, scissors and pre-cut shapes do the same job. A machine only speeds things up if you already own one.
What size are the cards?
Dollar Tree playing cards are standard poker size, about 2.5 by 3.5 inches. That fits most journal pockets and planner card slots.
Can I use the cards as journaling cards instead of index cards?
Yes. The stiff card stock holds up well in pockets and albums, and the printed back stays hidden once you cover the front.
