What you need
Steps
Choose an adult crew or knee-high sock in orange, cream or deep green. A stretchy, tight-knit sock gives you a rounder, smoother pumpkin.
Fill the sock with about 1 to 1.5 cups of rice, dried beans or polyester fiberfill. Stop when the sock is roughly three quarters full so you still have room to tie it off.
Push the filling down into the toe and squeeze the sides until you have a firm, even ball. Work out any lumps before you close the top.
Twist the open end of the sock tight against the filling. Wrap a rubber band or a length of twine around the twist several times and knot it if you use twine.
Cut off the leftover sock about 1 inch above the band using sharp scissors. Tuck the raw edge down so it hides underneath the pumpkin.
Wrap two or three more rubber bands or pieces of twine from top to bottom to create the pumpkin ridges. Space them evenly around the ball.
Push a cinnamon stick or short twig into the top centre for the stem. Add a dab of hot glue if it wobbles.
Cut two small leaf shapes from green or brown felt and glue them beside the stem. Let the glue cool and set fully before you put the pumpkin on display.
Tips and common mistakes
Pick a sock with a tight knit, because loose knits let rice dust leak out.
Do not overfill the sock, since a slightly soft pumpkin holds the ridge bands better.
Use twine in a matching colour if you want the ridges to blend in rather than show.
The tip of a hot glue gun gets very hot, so keep your fingers clear and let the pumpkin cool before handling it.
Questions
What can I use instead of rice?
Dried beans, lentils or polyester fiberfill all work. Fiberfill makes a much lighter pumpkin, while rice gives it a nice weighted base.
How big will the finished pumpkin be?
An adult crew sock makes a pumpkin roughly 4 to 5 inches across. Ankle socks make small ones, and knee-high socks make large ones.
Do I need a sewing machine or needle and thread?
No. Everything is held together with rubber bands, twine and a little glue, so there is no stitching at all.
