Steps
Fold a sheet of 250 to 300 gsm cardstock in half. Lay a stocking outline on it with the top of the stocking sitting on the folded edge, then trace around it in pencil.
Cut through both layers along the pencil line. Keep the folded top edge uncut so the card opens like a book.
Score along the fold with a bone folder and press it flat, then rub out any visible pencil marks.
Cut a rectangle of card about 1 cm wider and taller than your gift card. This becomes the inside pocket.
Tape the pocket to the inside right panel along the two long sides and the bottom edge, leaving the top edge open. Slide the gift card in to test the fit before you seal anything.
Decorate the front with patterned paper, a contrasting cuff band at the top and a ribbon bow. Glue everything down flat so the card still closes.
Write your greeting and the recipient's name inside, above or beside the pocket, using a fine liner or gel pen.
Slide the gift card into the pocket, close the stocking and tuck it into an envelope sized to match, or hand it over as it is.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep the top of the stocking on the fold, otherwise the card will not open like a greeting card.
Use double-sided tape rather than liquid glue on the pocket so the cardstock does not warp or wrinkle.
Test the gift card in the pocket before sticking it down, since card thicknesses vary.
Cut carefully away from your fingers with a craft knife, and always use a cutting mat underneath.
Questions
What size is a jumbo stocking card?
Most jumbo versions are made from a full sheet of A4 or letter cardstock folded in half, giving a card roughly 21 by 30 cm. Scale your template to that size so it still fits a standard envelope.
Will the gift card fall out?
Not if you tape three sides of the pocket and leave only the top open. You can also add a small paper tab or a strip of ribbon across the opening to hold the card in place.
Can I make this without a template?
Yes. Draw half a stocking shape freehand on folded paper, cut it out and open it up to check the shape. Use that as your template once you are happy with it.
